Governor Polis’ meat-less proclamation prompts meat-full celebrations statewide

DENVER — Over the last three weeks, nearly 9,000 frustrated Coloradans of all political stripes have taken to social media to express their thoughts over a proclamation by Gov. Jared Polis declaring March 20 as “MeatOut” day.

The Facebook page “Colorado Meat Producers Appreciation Day March 20” is only a fraction of the pushback against Polis, who asked Coloradans to not eat meat on March 20 as part of a larger national effort to introduce people to meat-free lifestyles.

In the proclamation, Polis adopts much of the language of meatout.org, that takes aim at the majority of his constituents who have chosen a carnivore lifestyle.  Meat out is a project of the national Farm Animal Rights Movement, which according to its website seeks to end the use of animals for food.

The proclamation was seen by many in the industry as another attack on Colorado’s agricultural history, prompting vendors and major contributors to either pull out or consider pulling out of the National Western Stock Show, threatening its future success, and multiple counties declared March 20 as “Meat-In” day. Alamosa, Chaffee, Conejos, Crowley, Douglas, El Paso, Elbert, Fremont, Garfield, Grand, Jackson, Kiowa, Kit Carson, La Plata, Las Animas, Logan, Mesa, Moffat, Montezuma, Morgan, Otero, Pueblo, Prowers, Rio Blanco, Routt, Washington, Weld, and Yuma counties, among others have all declared support for the cattle and agriculture industries in some way.

“When Governor Polis declared March 20 as meat-out day, it was a slap in the face to the thousands of ranching and farm families across this state,” said Weld County Commissioner Chair Steve Moreno. “It was yet another hit against rural Colorado.”

A Mesa County proclamation concurred: “All segments of agriculture are of vital importance to Mesa County and contribute to the healthy landscape in Mesa County,” the proclamation read. “Mesa County recognizes the contribution of restaurants and retail food establishments, especially during the pandemic, by supporting a Meat-In Day on March 20, 2021, that encourages a healthy, balanced diet that includes meat.”

Even in Pueblo County, where all three county commissioners are Democrats, the frustration was felt.

“Pueblo County cattlemen and their ranching families are part of a $3.4 billion state industry, with a $40B economic impact, accounting for 10% of the state’s total export sales,” the commissioners said in their own proclamation declaring March 20 as “Cattlemen’s Day.”

Weld, Yuma and Morgan counties combine for about $4 billion in annual sales of agricultural and ranching products, With Weld County accounting for half that on its own.

Polis’ proclamation also launched numerous alternative “meat-in” events across the state. Complete Colorado combed the internet looking for meat celebrations, some (absolutely not an all-encompassing list) of the organized public events include:

SUPPORT COMPLETE

Our unofficial motto at Complete Colorado is “Always free, never fake, ” but annoyingly enough, our reporters, columnists and staff all want to be paid in actual US dollars rather than our preferred currency of pats on the back and a muttered kind word. Fact is that there’s an entire staff working every day to bring you the most timely and relevant political news (updated twice daily) from around the state on Complete’s main page aggregator, as well as top-notch original reporting and commentary on Page Two.

CLICK HERE TO LADLE A LITTLE GRAVY ON THE CREW AT COMPLETE COLORADO. You’ll be giving to the Independence Institute, the not-for-profit publisher of Complete Colorado, which makes your donation tax deductible. But rest assured that your giving will go specifically to the Complete Colorado news operation. Thanks for being a Complete Colorado reader, keep coming back.
